Kitchen Compromises

Before our wedding, my fiance and I had to attend two pre-marriage counseling sessions. One was with a member of my church, who gave us one of those fill-in-the-dot-are-you-compatible? tests, and the other was a weekend retreat (aka Pre-Cana) at a nearby convent. Both the "test" and the retreat emphasized the importance of knowing the answers to those "big life questions" like who will pay the bills? how many children do you want?, etc. etc. We "passed" with flying colors. Of course we had already talked about these things. We're 28 and 34, and joked that the counseling was designed during a time when people still got married at 18.

Flash-forward three months into our marriage, when events prove that yes, the counseling was still deficient for communicators like us, but, umm, maybe there was a point to all that questioning and answering after all...

For us, the "big life questions" that needed to be asked and answered (but weren't) all center around the kitchen, like should we buy skim or 2% milk? and is it okay to continually ask your wife to eat fish when she has always stated that no sea creatures would ever cross her lips?

I never get more frustrated with my husband than when we're in the grocery store, and although I've adjusted to skim milk, I'm holding firm on the NO FISH (he knew this about me before we got married. Did he think I'd change?!?!).

This weekend I worked up the courage to tell my significant other that although I understood the health benefits of the organic, no-salt-added, peanut-oil-included peanut butter that we spent ten minutes picking out together at our local food co-op, I needed to switch back to the brand I grew up with, Skippy. He asked me what I didn't like about our current peanut butter and I told him. Then he helped me find the Skippy. What a sweetheart.

Maybe I won't even scream next time he attempts to put a piece of seafood on my plate.

Love it! Sometime I don't think my hubs is ever gonna get the hint and we have been together for 12 years! Way to compromise! Hope your having a great week! = )

Hahaha that is too funny! Only Peter Pan for me, but in our case, the boyfriend likes whole milk (ew) while I prefer 1/2%.

Haha, that's cute :) I don't love the healthier PB either, the consistency is always weird to me. We've had to compromise on the fish thing, too--I hate it!

You know, Skippy has an all natural peanut butter. Maybe he could try that!

I replied to your comment in an email...only to see that I'd sent it to the noreply-comment@blogger.com!

In Portland we always stay in the newer rooms@ The Doubletree across from Lloyd Center. They have the MOST comfortable beds ever!! We like to do our shopping at eating downtown though...Pearl District mostly.

I'd never thought of doing tires down there, but it makes total sense...that's lots of $ to be saved, especially if we're going down there anyways. Thanks for the idea! :)
